455 Solution Treated is a martensitic, age-hardenable stainless steel. This alloy represents a significant advancement in precipitation hardening stainless steel. Grade 455 has three times the yield strength of standard 304. It lends itself well to heat treatment and fabrication, has exceptionally high yield strength, good ductility, and toughness. The steel can be precipitation hardened to minimum tensile strengths up to 225000 psi (1551 MPa). This material is typically used for parts requiring corrosion resistance and high strength up to 800 F (427 C). This product resists staining in normal atmospheres and shows no corrosion in freshwater. 455 is often used to produce Drill Bits, Shafts, Drivers, Distractors and Surgical Instruments. (UNS S45500)
