440C (Carbon) is a martensitic stainless steel similar to 440A, with an even higher Carbon content. This material is typically used for parts requiring hardness up to 58 HRC and resistance to wear, corrosion, and oxidation. It has one of the highest attainable hardnesses of the corrosion and heat resisting grades. This grade is magnetic at all times. For those applications where superior machinability is desired and where slightly lower corrosion resistance is satisfactory 440C can be supplied. This material is often used for ball bearings, bushings, valve parts and cutlery.
